Take the scenic route
We had the campsite reserved until Monday morning and we slept in as all of us, including the dogs, were tired from the last couple of days. We got up and had a leisurely breakfast and then Sisko went back into the camper and jumped into bed. 😅😅
We had planned to just take today to be a rest day and sit in the sun by the stream that ran behind our campsite. However it was cooler than the last couple of days and also very cloudy. So instead we decided to take our time packing up everything and then we would take the scenic view home.
As we were packing up the dogs apparently thought that we were going to leave them there because they were very anxious to get in the car. We finally got everything packed up and took off. I think the dogs were both asleep but before we were even out of the park.
We stopped at a small town about 30 minutes away because I had seen where there was a short trail that led to a majestic waterfall. Because it was such a short walk I thought it would be easy on us. Boy was I wrong! It was navigating a windy and muddy trail alongside of a cliff. The dogs had no problem whatsoever as they were cheating by having four legs on the ground at all times! But the view was definitely worth it when we got to the end.
Our next stop came at a trail another 30 minutes away but neither of us had ever heard of or been on. It was a relatively flat trail and I thought this was a perfect opportunity to get today's run in. It was too hot for the dogs so Marc walked with them while I did a four mile run.
We then drove over to the local town and stopped for Marc and I to get coffee and got out some cold water for the dogs.
We continued our journey and decided to stop at Montezuma wildlife refuge. We've been there a few times before but not in several years. We walked down a short trail to the picnic area and had lunch. Then we drove through the refuge and saw songbirds, geese, swans and other wildlife.
Booker was pretty fascinated by the wildlife and leaned way out the window but was very well behaved and never barked once.
We were then ready to head home. We drove the remaining 90 minutes home in the dogs immediately headed in and put themselves to bed as we unpacked everything.
It was a fast and fun filled weekend and we still have tomorrow to have some fun before I have to leave for an out-of-town conference.
